What Is Age-Related Macular Degeneration?

Dry AMD is a slow, progressive eye condition, most often linked to ageing. Other risk factors include genetics, poor diet, and smoking. It occurs when the light-sensitive cells (photoreceptors) in the retina slow down and can’t remove waste products effectively. This leads to a gradual reduction in the eye’s ability to process light, causing distortion and reduced vision.

Importantly, having Dry AMD increases the risk of developing Wet AMD — a more aggressive form of the disease that can be harder to treat successfully.
